My story begins in the city of Kampala, Uganda, in 1965 with my parents, who were both desperately poor and unable to provide me with even the most basic needs. My father was an abusive alcoholic, and I was left unsupervised while he spent his days drinking at the bar.
When I came home from school, I would often find him passed out on the floor next to our family’s only bed, forcing me to sleep on the hard floor next to him until morning came and he sobered up enough to attend work at one of his two jobs.
